Live with Juston McKinney

a middle class holeNew Hampshire native Juston McKinney came into town this weekend and Steve, myself and our wives had the pleasure to see his show at Giggles on Route 1 in Saugus.  Hot on the heels of the release of his new DVD “A Middle Class Hole“. The one-hour special initially premiered on  Comedy Central and was released  to DVD on June 29.  The show had two opening acts, Todd Kane came on the stage first.  He was okay, but not really memorable. The second opening act was actually a headliner, we lucked out with Kenny Rogerson.  He was so funny I could not stop laughing through his entire set.  I actually started to feel bad for Juston having to follow Ken.  Juston held his own though and proved why he was the headline act that night.  With comedy from his new DVD “A Middle Class Hole” and some new stuff, he tore the place up.  We had the pleasure of having two bachelorette parties show up and I could not  wait for the comedians to tear them up.  Juston too his credit rarely used the obvious with them, but did use them as examples for some of his comedy.  The girls especially liked his routine “We all Settle”.

“I lost money in the stock market,” he says. “I bought my house in 2006, at the absolute peak of the real estate market. I might as well have bought a shrimp business last year in the Gulf of Mexico.”

This is how he starts his”Cul De Suck” routine, which is so truthful it’s funny.  Juston, yes that ‘O’ is supposed to be there.  As Juston tells it his father named him Juston because he was born Just On time, where he precedes to tell his father that Just In time means the same thing.

Juston talks a lot about finances which hits home for most of us. In “Day Care and College” he talks about how daycare costs $15,000, how can you even think about saving for college.  Juston knows all too well the financial pitfalls that await hard working folks.  While in New York, he befriended a waiter at Dangerfield’s Comedy Club who was a part-time stockbroker. The waiter/stockbroker talked him into putting all his money in the market. Very shortly after, in 2000, the market crashed, which left him with virtually nothing.  Juston likes to perform on stage because that appears to be the only place he has good timing. Some free financial advice from Juston, “Never give hundreds of thousands of dollars to a waiter. You’re supposed to give waiters tips, not take tips from waiters.”  Juston is Often compared to the Blue Collar Comedy guys, and considered by some to be the next generation of blue collar comedy.  I for one think  Juston is well on his way to becoming one of the next great comics.  His comedic timing is on the mark and his story telling is truly genuine and enjoyable.  His comedy focuses on his family his finances and his life.  He is just like the rest of us, trying to make it in this world and making it he is.
